The only sure bulwark of continuing liberty is a government strong enough to protect the interests of the people, and a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the government.

–Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Mercer "... demonstrates a command of issues like public safety, economic development and transportation needs.  He is one of the most open council members in communicating with his constituents, even those who strongly disagree with his positions.  And while he is focused on issues important to his district, he also keeps the interests of the whole city in mind as he weighs decisions."

Fellow Citizens of Greenville,

This is an exciting and pivotal time for our city.  Greenville is in a period of rapid growth, and decisions about the nature of these changes will impact our community for generations to come.  I value your help as we continue working together to build a city of excellence.

In this very challenging economic environment, I am proud to have worked on developing a prudent city budget, which required no cuts in essential services and no increases in taxes.  Indeed, in recent times the city has been able to hire, or has budgeted for, 14 new police officers, 12 new fire and rescue workers, and a neighborhood ombudsman, and significantly upgraded its law enforcement technology.  Forbes magazine recently ranked Greenville #2 in the nation in its list of "Best Small Places for Business and Careers," citing our high job and income growth and low cost of doing business.

With your help I will continue to work for:

  • Smart, planned growth that benefits all our citizens, small and large businesses, and neighborhoods.
  • Quality of life initiatives that build a city where people can live, work, and play safely.
  • An informed, active citizenry that fosters open, responsible government.

I will continue to approach issues thoughtfully and with the interests of all our people, businesses, and neighborhoods in mind.  I have a vision of Greenville as a vibrant business, educational, health, and cultural leader in North Carolina; a powerful economic center with many biotech, green, ecotourism, and other industries; a beautiful, walkable, bikeable, inclusive, safe city with a dynamic uptown; and a city famous for its towering oak trees, flowered parks, clean air, and healthy citizens who know their neighbors.  We must act today to make sure our city is a place where we and our children and our grandchildren will enjoy living, working, and serving.

As exemplified in my Town Hall meetings and my twice-monthly newsletter—sent by request to interested citizens—I will keep you informed about your city government and explain my votes on important issues.  Send me your email address if you would like this occasional newsletter where I give my comments on important and controversial city issues.

I welcome your support as we work together to build a city of excellence.

Thank you,

Calvin Mercer
